PREP FOR SUCCESS (fall)
Grades 11 to 12
Semester Fee: $60
Class Size: Min. 10, Max. 20
This 12-week class is ideal for Juniors and Seniors. The class covers three distinct areas: money management, relationships, and business and college life. Students will learn about setting financial goals, finding a career you love, setting up a budget, savings and investments, credit, and insurance. Discussion on relationships will focus on how to get along with a college roommate, coworkers, or preparing for marriage. Success in life is knowing how to get along with others. Business and college life will address appropriate dress, resume writing, interviewing, and establishing a good work ethic.
 
WELCOME TO BUSINESS
Grades 10 to 12
Semester Fee: $58
Class Size: Min. 6, Max. 30
This class is designed to teach high school students the basics of operations, management, marketing, finance, information management, leadership, personal development, and ethics. Once a month a real business owner will come visit our class and share his/her insight on the journey to successful business ownership. There will be multiple class studies, papers, quizzes, and other miscellaneous assignments throughout the semester. Students are encouraged to prepare for an excellent learning experience.
REQUIRED TEXTS: Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephan Covey; Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson available at bookstores or used at www.half.com.
 
WRITING RESUMES & APPLYING FOR INTERNSHIPS
Grades 10 to 12
Semester Fee: $20
This 5-week class targets students (and parents of high school students) wanting to enhance their high school education with an internship. The class encourages students to start exploring and planning a career. It emphasizes the importance of obtaining internships in college and the necessary steps to obtain one (i.e., how to look for an internship, setting goals, and marketing yourself.) Students will learn the importance of ‘dressing for success’ and what that means in different industries. Students will also be coached on how to write a cover letter and resume as well as other steps in the application process.
REQUIRED TEXT: The Everything Job Interview Book by Bob Adams, available from www.christianbooks.com Barnes and Nobel ($14.95) is recommended as a reference during class as well as for the future.
 
INTRO TO MANUFACTURING: BASIC BLUEPRINT READING AND CNC MACHINES
Grades 9 to 12
Semester Fee: None; $20 book fee
Manufacturing jobs pay well and require a great deal of computer knowledge and a strong work ethic. First we cover basic blueprint reading, looking into all the aspects of what a machinist would come across in his daily duties -- sketch views, angles, radiuses, stacked tolerances, and looking over the whole blueprint and all of its meaning. We will learn how to measure the parts and with what gages and go over most, if not all, types of gages for measuring. Next we cover beginning CNC (computer numerical controlled) machines. There are opportunities to work anywhere in the world with this trade. We will learn about mills, lathes, Swiss style machines, and machining centers. Part of that will be machine offsets, tool offsets, programming, and of course, safety concerns in the work environment. There will be visits to facilities to tour their shops. For some fieldtrips, students must be 16 years or older.
 
INTRO TO MICROSOFT OFFICE
Grades 9 to Adult
Semester Fee: $55
Class Size: Min. 3, Max. 15
This class will cover the basic functions, uses, and benefits of four of the main programs in the Microsoft Office suite including, Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook. The student will be given hands-on experience with each of these programs and will learn how to incorporate them into everyday life. The skills learned will be invaluable for higher education and future career use.
PREREQUISITE: Basic understanding of how to use a computer.
REQUIRED MATERIALS: Laptop computer with Microsoft Office ‘97 or later version installed. (Laptop preferred but not necessary). Book: Microsoft Office XP Plain and Simple will be provided by Instructor and is included in class fee.
