HISTORY OF MODERN EUROPE (post 1500)
Grades 10 to 12
Semester Fee: $85
Class Size: Min. 6
As students of history, we tend to pay some attention to ancient history, less to the medieval period (those “Dark Ages” -- not so!), and a considerable amount to American history, although it comprises a very small fraction of the story of mankind since Adam and Eve. We give little thought to the history that is the immediate predecessor to our own, namely the history of modern Europe. This class will discuss Europe from the close of the Middle Ages until the Cold War, including the Reformation, the wars of religion, the revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the many wars between great nations. Class will be conducted as a seminar -- lots of reading, lots of discussion, and lots of opportunities for independent research and presentation.
REQUIRED TEXT: Davies, Norman, Europe: A History, (Oxford University Press, 1996) ISBN 0195209125 (Oxford University Press hardcover -- used copies available on Internet) ISBN 0060974680 (Harper Perennial, paperback, about $17 on Amazon.com) (Don’t panic; we’re not reading the entire 1,300+ pages.)

U.S. HISTORY
Grades 9 to 12
Semester Fee: $75
Class Size: Min. 5, Max. 15
The Exploring America curriculum is an American history high school curriculum combining American history, American literature, and Bible. It helps high school students gain a fuller understanding of our nation’s past as they read the history narrative (including some original documents), read classic American literature, complete writing assignments, and study what the Bible says about issues and ideas in American history. I enjoy making learning fun and helping my students connect the dots. We will travel through America’s history and see how God’s hand has been guiding it from the beginning.

Note: The author has written this curriculum as fulfilling three high school credits (U.S. History, Bible, American Lit.) While we are excited about this three-fold approach to history and feel this is a good curriculum to follow for a high school credit in U.S. History, Mrs. Gaudry will only be able to cover the history portion of the curriculum at HHSW. If you are interested in your student also earning a Bible and/or Literature credit, see Mrs. Gaudry.

REQUIRED TEXT: Exploring America Curriculum Package, $89.95. Ordering information and quantity discount for this curriculum are available at registration from instructor.

WORLD GEOGRAPHY

Grades 9 to 12

Semester Fee: $70 plus text rental fee TBD

Geography is the study of both the physical and human features of the earth and analyzing the patterns and relationships of each. In the process, these areas of geographic study are linked to other subjects including science, history, economics, and sociology. The required text divides the earth into 10 regions emphasizing physical and cultural geography as well as current events. One of the most rewarding subjects I have taught to my children is the subject of geography. One definition is: “The world and all that is in it.” While you can’t learn everything in one year, we hope this class will be an introduction that will inspire students to a life-long interest in the study of God’s creation and ALL His people. Homework is four to five hours per week and will include 5 pages of reading/day, study questions, reports, and map work. There will be a quiz each week and some class lab work. The course includes participation in the Project Fair in the spring.

REQUIRED TEXT: World Geography by Glencoe/National Geographic Society, available for a rental fee.
