This course starts out with an entire chapter on logic. Proofs will hopefully be easier to understand once the students understand some logic. The main part of the book covers classical high school geometry, except that the text has cartoons and other humorous ways of presenting things. Short algebra reviews will be assigned most weeks. All homework will be graded at home and assigned a completion grade by a parent. Quizzes and tests will be graded by me and will make up the majority of the grade. (Some of these will be administered at home.) A parent should attend the first class.
PREREQUISITE: Algebra 1
REQUIRED MATERIALS: Jacobs Geometry, Seeing, Doing, Understanding, 3rd Edition, ISBN 0716743612 (chess set on cover), & EITHER Teacher’s Guide ISBN 0716708000 OR Enhanced Teacher’s Guide ISBN 0716756072. I plan on having a used curriculum table at registration for 2007-2008 materials to be passed on. Also, try BookFinder.com early. LOGIC
Grades 9 to 12
Semester Fee: $55
Class Size: Min. 5, Max. 30
One of the chief criticisms leveled at people of faith is that the faithful are unreasonable -- implying that if the faithful were reasonable, they would no longer be religious. It is the study of logic that debunks this theory. If students are able to decide for themselves what they believe, logic can help them understand why they believe and defend their beliefs from attack. It is one of the most crucial fields of study for students who plan on taking any liberal arts classes whatsoever after high school graduation. Emphasis will be on in-class participation as much as homework.
PREREQUISITE: pre-algebra
REQUIRED TEXT: All books can be purchased through Rainbow Resource -- (1) Introductory Logic ISBN 1-885767-36-6, Rainbow Resource Item #005794. Solutions Key ISBN 1-885767-56-0. (2) Intermediate Logic ISBN 1-885767-13-7, Rainbow Resource Item #000832. Solutions Key ISBN 1-885767-57-9. Order texts early, by mid June.
